Project Description
A New View Painting recently completed an interior wood trim restoration project for a custom Craftsman-style home in Erie, CO, located in the Vista Ridge neighborhood. The home featured original cherry wood trim throughout, including baseboards, door casings, and detailed headers. Over time, parts of the trim showed wear, fading, and damage to the original finish.
Our interior painting scope focused on restoring the existing wood rather than replacing it. We sanded worn areas, repaired damaged sections, blended stain where needed, and sealed everything with a durable clear varnish. The goal was to bring the trim back to a consistent, rich finish while keeping its original character intact.
Background / Story:
Kim has been a long-time client and reached out after noticing several areas where her interior trim no longer matched the rest of the home. Her house is about 25 years old and was originally built as a Parade of Homes showcase, so the trim package was far from standard. Unlike paint-grade trim, this was custom cherry wood with a stained and varnished finish, which requires a very different approach.
Some sections only needed light sanding and re-varnishing. Others had deeper issues where the stain beneath the old lacquer had broken down. In those spots, we carefully sanded further, blended new stain by hand, and allowed it to cure before sealing it. Matching stain on older wood takes patience and experience, so we tested several options before landing on the right tone. Once the color matched, we applied a water-based varnish to protect the trim and bring everything together visually.
Scope of Services:
- Interior wood trim restoration throughout the home
- Sanding existing lacquer and varnish to prep surfaces
- Spot stain blending on damaged cherry wood trim
- Clear varnish application for protection and consistency
- Detailed handwork on baseboards, headers, and trim pieces
Products Used:
- Minwax stain (custom color match)
- Minwax Polycrylic water-based varnish
Results:
The finished trim looked rich, smooth, and consistent again. The repaired areas blended seamlessly with the surrounding wood, and the entire space felt refreshed without losing its original craftsmanship. Kim was thrilled with the outcome and shared how impressed she was with the attention to detail, especially on the baseboards and high-visibility trim areas.
