Project Description

Residential interior painting in Erie, CO is what A New View Painting specializes in, and this Vista Ridge transformation delivered a dramatic upgrade to a dated home interior.

This one-week residential project involved sanding and refinishing a staircase with a rich dark stain, along with priming and painting old stained trim and doors on the main level of the home.

The goal was to modernize the space by eliminating the orange/red stained wood tones that were common in homes built 20โ€“30 years ago.

Background/Story:

Kate purchased her home in the Vista Ridge neighborhood of Erie, CO about a year prior to this project. Shortly after moving in, she hired us for basic wall painting, which significantly improved the feel of her home.

However, the outdated orange/red stained trim throughout the main level continued to hold the home back from achieving a truly fresh and modern look.

Having completed many similar trim transformations, we knew exactly what it would take to deliver the results she envisioned. We explained that achieving a factory-smooth, furniture-grade finish would require extensive sanding and spraying, meaning the home would need to be vacated for the week. With honesty and clear expectations, Kate trusted the process โ€” and the results proved it was the right decision.

Preparation was extensive. We carefully masked and protected surrounding areas with rolls of plastic and masking paper to contain dust and overspray. For the staircase, we sanded through the old lacquer and stain to bring the railings down to bare wood. This labor-intensive step ensured proper absorption of the new, deeper stain color and a flawless finish.

Scope of Services:

  • Sanding of railings down to bare wood to remove old lacquer and stain, ensuring proper adhesion and even absorption of the new finish
  • Staining newel posts and handrails with a darker finish to achieve a richer, more modern aesthetic
  • Applying multiple coats of lacquer to stained railings for enhanced durability and a smooth, furniture-grade appearance
  • Priming old stained trim and doors with stain-blocking primer to prevent bleed-through and create a solid foundation for paint
  • Sanding between coats for a smooth finish that feels refined and professionally crafted
  • Caulking seams and filling nail holes to eliminate gaps and imperfections before final paint application
  • Spraying and finishing doors, door casings, and baseboards for a flawless, factory-like finish with crisp, clean lines

Paints/Products Used:

  • Minwax Dark Walnut stain โ€“ Chosen for its rich, deep tone that modernizes outdated orange/red wood while still highlighting the natural grain of the staircase. Its reliable penetration and consistent color make it ideal for high-visibility architectural features like railings and newel posts.
  • Sherwood Dull Rubbed Lacquer (3 coats) โ€“ Selected for its exceptional durability and smooth, professional finish. This lacquer provides a hard, protective shell that stands up to daily hand traffic while delivering the elegant, furniture-grade sheen homeowners expect.
  • Stix stain-blocking primer โ€“ Used specifically to bond to previously stained wood and prevent tannin bleed-through. Its superior adhesion properties create a dependable foundation that ensures long-term performance of the painted trim and doors.
  • Emerald Urethane Semigloss (Pure White) โ€“ A premium trim enamel designed for hardness and smooth leveling. This product delivers a crisp, bright white finish with excellent durability, making it perfect for doors, casings, and baseboards that experience frequent contact.

Results:

The staircase was transformed with a rich Minwax Dark Walnut stain, followed by three coats of dull rubbed lacquer for a durable, elegant finish. The newly painted trim, doors, and baseboards in Pure White created a crisp contrast and completely modernized the main level.

Kate was thrilled with the results and especially appreciated the guidance to vacate during the project. With two small children at home, staying elsewhere ensured a smoother process for everyone involved. The home now reflects the updated aesthetic she originally envisioned โ€” and with an upstairs still to tackle, we may be returning for phase two.
